MPADPs COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY - SIPA Admissions Blog As most of you may know, SIPA is a place where you come to do an MIA (Master of International Affairs) or an MPA (Master of Public Administration). When encountering new people at school, the first question you get asked is usually “what’s your concentration?”, or sometimes an even more blunt, “Are you EPD?”.   Walking around our beloved International Affairs building, you can’t help hearing stories about the endless “Conceptual Foundations” course readings, or the “light” assignments for the Politics of Policymaking course, better known as POP. But although these two programs might encompass the majority of Seeples [SIPA students], there is a third, not so well known category, popularly identified as the “MDPs”.   MDP or MPA-DP is the acronym for the Master in Public Administration in Development Practice program.   MPA-DP is a relatively new program, originally quite small but it is increasingly becoming more popular.   We are the returned Peace-Corps volunteers; the ones who leave NYC for some of the most remote corners of Africa every summer; and the sometimes peculiar crowd that always hangs out together on the 6th floor. But aside from this subtle uniqueness and its smaller size, are we really that different? As a second year MPA-DP student myself, I wouldn’t say so.   Academically, the main difference in the first semester is that the MPA-DP core course is called “Foundations of Sustainable Development”, and as its name suggests, rather than focusing on international relations, like the MIAs, or policy-making, like the MPAs, we study what is behind sustainable development. Aside from that, we share all the quantitative and economic courses, the core and all the parties. From then on, MDPs have to take courses on the various disciplines that shape development.   The goal of our program is to train well rounded practitioners who can understand the broad picture, being familiar with key topics in the development world such as public health, food security, nutrition, infrastructure, environmental issues, among others.   This multi-sectoral curriculum is our “concentration”.   This is not to say that you cannot specialize in something if you want to, because we have plenty of electives left to choose all sorts of courses at SIPA and Columbia.   Likewise, a certain number of MPAs and MIAs are also welcome in core MPA-DP classes every semester and if they wish to construct this kind of interdisciplinary knowledge, they also have electives to do so. So ultimately, aside from your concentration or lack of thereof, I think SIPA is a school that gives you enough space to explore other disciplines and take the subjects you like (disclaimer: in your 2nd year).   All the MIAs, MPAs, MPA-DPs, and even the more mysterious PEPMs, EMPAs and ESPs, share facilities, courses, professors and the privilege of being part of a school that has plenty of amazing people in every program. In other words, using our own desires as standards for how others want to be treated is flawed. She improves on this by treating others as she can best guess that they want to be treated, within the limits of her own ethical parameters. Secondly, she would amend it to include a more long-term focus. A person may want you to treat them one way today, but may realize that it will hurt them even more later. Alternatively, a person may not want you to do something today (a child being given a vaccine) that you realize will be of great benefit in the long run. Ultimately, she strives to treat people as they treat her, and to be as tolerant of differences as can be when it comes to gender, sexual orientation, race, or anything else. Trying her best to treat each person with respect until she is given a reason to do anything else. However, she also maintains the right to defend herself when wronged, and to set healthy boundaries around her. Megan feels things are not exactly in tip top shape in our society, it didn’t take long for her to start looking the way of government. She believes government is so corrupt that you are naive if you even think for a second that it isnt. She knows hardly anyone claims that the government and our leaders are working fully in our best interests in a fair and decent manner. It is so bad that it is common knowledge even among most schoolchildren that you cant trust politicians as far as you can throw them. And yet, despite everyone knowing this, most people still support the two major parties. An eager supporter of Clinton in 1992 and 1996. In 2000, she was almost awakened to the point of ditching the two parties, but George W. Bush saw to it that she remained long enough to vote for Gore that year. Never before had she so strongly felt the need to vote just to vote against someone. She actually wasnt going to vote, and then at the last minute realized that if Bush won, she wouldnt forgive herself for not voting against him. Bush did win, and in her eyes has taken this country to a new level of insanity. And yet, when she asked herself what Gore would have done had he been in office, she kept coming to the conclusion that all the Democrats would do is the same things the Republicans would do, only slower. The Republicans will corrupt this country fast; the Democrats will corrupt it slowly. She had then started to consider the idea of supporting a third party, being so fed up with the two majors. However, she saw the Green Party as a bunch of hippies who just wanted pot legalized so that they could smoke weed all day. This wasnt her. She was looking for a party that supported fair treatment in terms of economics, the environment, gender and sexual orientation, and everything else. She then became aware that she had been a victim of a stereotype. That isnt to say that there arent many Green Party supporters who are just looking for a place to rebel, legalize drugs, and escape rather than make true positive reforms. But that is not the stance of the party, nor everyone, or even most people in it. She still considers herself an independent in that she will always make decisions and form opinions on each issue and on each candidate on its own merits. However, there are only rare occasions where those independent choices dont match up pretty closely with the stances of the Green Party. Thus, for all intents and purposes, she is Green. What American is against grassroots democracy? Who is against social justice and equal opportunity? Who doesnt want a non-violent society? Certainly she can see the other side on issues like decentralization, and wishing that the value was just gender equity, rather than feminism. But overall, these principles seem to be just common sense if humanity is to continue to exist on this planet for much longer. Her career path has spent a long while in a limbo state, but now is finally beginning to take shape, when she decided to go back to college. She had attended before but dropped out to get married and start a family at age 19. Three children later her biggest goal is to finish her associate’s degree in Office Administration and move on to achieve her Bachelors in Business or Marketing. She truly aspires to do great things after college not just for herself but for her whole family. She wishes to be eternally curious and seeking. Always work toward her highest potentials. At all times be the best lover, best friend and best wife she can possibly be to her beloved husband. Use emotional intelligence to the best of her ability at any given time. She also aspires to hold herself personally responsible for her own life, happiness and success. To stay true to her own standards of cooperation, humanity and empathy; be passionate and active with all the things, people and situations she admires. And, still be able to change when and where it is appropriate to do so. Lastly she hopes to be adventurous without being foolish.

The insider in sharp contrast does not refer at all to specific Scientology policies, he merely gives a broad overview of the Church and its ability to cure any members emotional or mental state of anguish. This has often been an accusation brought against new religious movements and their deceptive techniques of recruitment, that initially they will give very little specifics about the Church and make it appear to be a universally acceptable group centered around ideas of health and happiness. In this sense the insiders argument seems insubstantial, and plays into preconceived notions of new religious movements and their recruitment methods. After analyzing the few similarities and countless areas of contention between the two articles there are obvious conclusions that must be drawn. First, when analyzing the insider versus outsider perspective it is important to keep in mind that no one side is purely neutral in their beliefs. It would be nai ve to think that the insider would be overly critical of their experience, as well as the outsider to be out rightly supportive of a new religious movement. It is the job of the respective individual to prove something to the reader, whether it be that Scientology is beneficial to society or a stereotypical cult-like new religious group. Therefore it is not a matter of identifying which perspective remained along neutral lines, but which author argued the best case for their point. In this particular analysis the outsider managed to present a strong case against the Church of Scientology using hard evidence to support every claim that was made. Unlike her insider counterpart, Watcher as a writer was able to criticize the Church of Scientology from a number of fronts without confusing personal opinion for hard evidence. The downfall of the insiders article was that their emotion and feelings toward the Church of Scientology clouded their ability to critically access the religions policy and practices. How successful was organized labor in improving the position essays Drafting hundreds of thousands of recruits, holding hundreds of strikes, and uniting endless opportunities, labor unions were a striking force during the late 1870's and early 1900's. Labor unions were the workers' saviors in providing less cruel and demanding physical labor. The most troubling issues at the time were the elongated 12 hour work shifts and child exploitation. A document advertising a massive town meeting (document 7) reflects how alarming the problem was. Factories covering many towns and cities required 12 hour shifts sometimes with no lunch breaks. Workers would sometimes have to also deal with the clinical fatigue and illness associated with the long workdays. Even more disturbing to workers was the increasing number of juvenile laborers. Depicted in documents two and four, many kids would have to work in order to sustain their family's income. Although magnanimous in personal sacrifice many children were physically inept to take on such demanding and filthy conditions. To help solve these universal problems many unions were formed in order to inspire change. Many unions such as the American Railroad Union resorted to strikes notably as their paramount weapon for change. The Pullman Strike, shown in document six is the most famous strike riot during its time. Lead by Eugene Debs (document 1), a socialist leader, more than 125,000 worker joined hands in essentially called for a boycott on Pullman's palace cars on nation railways. The strike although dismantled by President Cleveland, was a huge triumph for Chicago factory workers. Another example attributing to the success of unions was the Haymarket Riot of 1886. Seen in document 2, the Haymarket Riot helped to actually reform other union organizations by showing the tragedy of violence. Conclusion The concern that Carl Robbin has implied in the scenario needs to be replaced by action and planning. The facts remain that the time is short. Promises have been made to facilitate the orientation in a certain time frame. Completion of the project is necessary to fulfill the goals set by the supervisor and as personally set by Robbins. This project can be completed on time and with an acceptable level of quality. Whereas some additional expense may be incurred if a conference room must be rented, it is likely a minor expense when the cost of recruiting is considered.
